Prologue to the Beitou Nostalgia “Everyone Has Their Own Fantastic Route” Solo Exhibition by Pahawlan Cilan Opening Press Conference

All the interested reporters and journalists are invited to join Pahawlan Cilan’s solo exhibition “Everyone Has Their Own Fantastic Route,” which is scheduled to take place at 11 AM, May 21, 2021 at Ketagalan Culture Center with sponsorship by the Indigenous Peoples’ Commission, Taipei City Government.

Situated between Guandu and Yanmingshan, Xinbeitou boasts its network of hiking and biking trails. The Ketagalan Culture Center is located along the path that adjoins the mountain and the river, welcoming people from all walks of life and accommodating not only the local aborigines but all passengers and travelers either simply cruising or in search for whatever that exists or does not.
Pahawlan Cilan was raised in Xinbeitou, where he built his childhood memory on serpentine alleys and hilly, winding trails. Because of his father’s occupation as a policeman, he used to reside at the Zen Garden, study at Shihpai Elementary School and play at Beitou Children’s Park. His father used to go grocery shopping at Beitou Market from the Zen Garden with him, walking the rocky trail in Xinbeitou, which became a routine they were unable to get rid of. The reminiscence carried over even into his adulthood as he began working in Zhishan, when he would unconsciously make a detour on his way to his studio from his place in Shihpai, internalizing the his unintended cruise and search as inspiration for his engagement in art. Over these past   few years, Cilan has embarked on speed writing and started blogging on social network, drawing out heartfelt ponderancy from his readership about the significance of the roads and trails he has promenaded throughout his life using digital images and passages.
Titled “Everyone Has Their Fantastic Route,” the event is a query posed to his audience, in the same tone he converses with his readers online and shares his stories and views. His digital sketches will also be featured this time at the Ketagalan Culture Center. The event is intended to reminisce about his childhood by recounting his emotionally-charged anecdote using video projection and animation, in hopes of tugging at the heartstrings of his audience and appealing to their pathos.
“Everyone Has Their Own Fantastic Route” is a solo exhibition by Pahawlan Cilan and is scheduled to take place between May 21 and August 16, 2021. Mr. Bakan Pawan, acting chairperson of the Indigenous Peoples’ Commission of Taipei City, cordially invites everyone to explore the wonder of road trips at the 3rd floor showroom of the Ketagalan Culture Center on May 21st.
