2023 Kongsuan Taipei Episode I: Si'uma–Special Exhibition about Siraya

The Siraya tribe had a traditional habit of “walking day and night without rest.” There was a story about a father and his son. The father was the “flying” indigenous person Tien-Yu Cheng, who “could walk as fast as flying and run faster than horses” . . .

The Siraya tribe had a traditional habit of “walking day and night without rest.” There was a story about a father and his son. The father was the “flying” indigenous person Tien-Yu Cheng, who “could walk as fast as flying and run faster than horses” . . .

The first special exhibition of the Ketagalan Cultural Center in 2023 started on April 14th. Beginning with the “running” ritual activity of the Siraya tribe, the exhibition adopts the display method of the “Kuwu” (ancestral hall) at the belief center of the Kabuasua (Gibalashao) tribe in Dongshan District, Tainan City. Visitors can easily enter the world of the Siraya tribe and get to know their way of life, ethnicity, and characteristics as if they were visiting a tribe.

This exhibition specially invites Mr. Hong-kun Duan, who is dedicated to reviving the Siraya language, culture, and history, as the curator. He hopes to tell everyone that the traditional Siraya night rituals and ancient songs still exist, and the Siraya people have not been “assimilated into  Han culture and disappeared”!

The exhibition consists of six main areas, including “Who is Siraya,” “Si'uma,” “Mata,” “About Ta-ai,” “Filial Sea - Looking at the sea and memorizing ancestors,” and “Siraya Culture Interactive Zone.” With the unique theme of walking toward culture, the exhibition takes visitors from the shallow to the deep, guiding them to understand the living conditions of the Siraya tribe and their journey towards recognition.

Alak Akatuang, also known as Hongkun Duan, was born in the Kabuasua (Gibalashao Village) of Dongshan District, Tainan City. Although he often heard stories about the tribe from the elders, he didn't fully understand his own culture until he returned to the tribe to settle down after his father passed away. In the 1980s, with the rise of indigenous awareness, the “Pingpu” people began to receive more attention. Getting to know more about Selaya culture, he gradually developed ideals and aspirations for his ethnic group. For over a decade, he has dedicated himself to the tribe and worked tirelessly to revive the language of the tribe, making him a true “activist of ethnic movement.”
